20-YEAR-OLD Bokamoso Nkutshweu found a temporary job in pumping the water-logged pavement near Mathibestad taxi rank in Phase 1 RDP.
This is the water caused by the recent heavy rainfall that caused havoc across Moretele and many parts of Mzansi destroying critical infrastructure.
According to Bokamoso, on a daily basis, good Samaritan Ntate Molautsi, a resident from Phase 1 RDP buys at least 20 liters of petrol for the water pump machine which uses a generator. “I am happy that this pavement will soon be fixed and people will have their lives back.”
Residents living across the pavement also breathed a sigh of relief following Moretele Local Municipality Mayor’s visit earlier today, Wednesday, 05 March 2025.
The visit by the Mayor, Hon. Cllr Masango George Manyike is part of his Nnetefatso Program. A program aimed to visit projects and disaster affected areas.
The Mayor was joined by the Speaker, Hon. Cllr Freda Mapela, Exco Members (HR Chairperson, Hon. Cllr VK Maluleka, IDS Chairperson, Hon. Cllr Maggie Moetjie and Sports Chairperson, Hon. Cllr Morake Molefe and SPU Chairperson, Hon. Cllr V Mphaphudi, Hon. J Macheke), Municipal Manager, Mr. Sipho Ngwenya and IDS Director, Mr. Pholoso Molautsi.
During the visit, the Mayor informed the affected residents that the pavement will be rebuilt to ensure that flooding is a thing of the past. The residents expressed joy that finally the thorny pavement will be repaired to better quality and they can now start driving their cars.
“Since these recent rains, we haven’t used our cars. We are stuck in our own yards and we were forced to remove some of the pavement bricks to make pathways so that we can leave our yards on foot. We thank the Mayor for coming and always taking our calls,” they said.
The contractor, Ecotroopers Construction and consultant, Calibre Consulting, formed part of the visit. The scope of work of the 1km paved internal road with kerbs and V-drain has been revised to include the re-construction of the damaged section from the previous phase (Phase 1). The project is 80% complete.
The second and third stops were at Tlhoele and Ga-Habedi where portions of the bridges collapsed.
