Flood Relief Efforts Bring Hope to Affected Moretele Residents

IT’S usually a norm that when blue skies start gathering, it’s a sign of a storm. Be that as it may, that did not deter the spirits of more than fifty (50) people from across different wards in Moretele who waited patiently for the superlink truck outside Moeka-Vuma Police Station to finish offloading their building material.

Ninety seven (97) families identified through assessments by Moretele Local Municipality Disaster Unit and verification by the national Department of Human Settlements are this morning, Thursday, 27 February 2025 each set to receive housing relief material to assist them in rebuilding their houses which were destroyed by the heavy rains which occurred between December 2024, January 2025 and February 2025.

The rains, which not only displaced more than 120 families caused widespread damages on roads, bridges and critical infrastructure alike.

The ninety seven (97) families will receive 16 IBR corrugated iron sheets, 6 round poles, 6 paralines, four packets of carpentry nails, 1 door lock, 1 aluminum window with a window handle, 1 pallet door and winches.

Another six (6) families whose mud houses collapsed between December 2024 and January 2025 rains will receive Temporary Relief Units (TRU). The beneficiaries are from Tlholoe (Ward 1), Lebotloane (Ward 04), Mathibestad (Ward 24), Mmakaunyane (Ward 08), Lekgolo (Ward 05), and Dertig (Ward 22). Their temporary structures are to the erected/ built over the weekend.

According to Community Development Services (CDS) Director, Ms. Granny Temba, the department of human settlements approved 105 households from the disaster cases reported and assessed in January 2025 to receive the relief materials delivered today.

Moretele Local Municipality Mayor, Hon. Cllr Masango George Manyike expressed joy and gratitude for the relief efforts made by the department. “What is happening today, is a sign of a government at work. When our people were displaced by the recent heavy rains, we provided temporary shelter for them and food. Gift of the Givers, also came to donate food parcels and more. We remain grateful for all the support we keep receiving and welcome those that may come.”

The Mayor further expressed hope to the Provincial Department of Public Works and Roads to commit a budget to fix the ten identified damaged roads and bridges in Moretele. “I hope that we do not wait for a long time before they are fixed.”
