THE Setswana idiom “Le ojwa lesale metsi” proved true during a question-and-answer
session that followed various presentations at the official launch of waste separation
at the source for primary schools within Moretele Local Municipality. This event was
attended by dozens of primary school learners.
“Everyone can reduce, reuse, and recycle waste materials,” one of the learners stated.
They also highlighted that recyclable materials can be used as compost.
The engaging session fostered environmental awareness among the learners,
promoted responsible consumption, and equipped them with the knowledge and skills to reduce waste, conserve resources, and make informed choices that benefit them
beyond the school environment. It demonstrated that learning can be both enjoyable
and educational.
Key stakeholders, including the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment,
as well as Petco, which donated color-coded wheelie bins to sixty-six (66) primary
schools in Moretele, participated in the event held at the Municipal Hall in Mathibestad.
Mmasentle Tlou from Petco informed the learners about the importance of recycling,
the types of materials that can be recycled, and the process that occurs when the bins
are full.
LED Chairperson Hon. Cllr John Macheke announced that the department plans to
distribute wheelie bins to all households in Moretele. He expressed gratitude to MEC
Bitsa Lenkopane from DEDECT for not forgetting Moretele. MMC Macheke also
voiced concern that departments should not only implement programs in municipalities
but also monitor their effectiveness, citing the example of the buy-back centre in
Mathibestad, which is currently in poor condition.
BTO Chairperson Hon. Cllr Charles Pete welcomed and appreciated the program for
schools, encouraging the learners to apply the information they learned—emphasizing
that nothing should be discarded, including cans, and that they should recycle waste
to keep their environment clean.
