14 Days to Dignity…Construction of Paulinah Mhlongo’s New Home Begins!
AN emotional Paulinah Mhlongo (30) broke down in tears of joy as the Chairman of the Nyikes Foundation, Mr. Masango George Manyike, officially turned the soil to mark the commencement of construction of her family’s new home.
The Foundation visited the Mhlongo family on Monday, 24 February 2026, to formally introduce the appointed building contractor and confirm that construction would begin without delay. Today, Tuesday, 25 February 2026, dozens of residents gathered once again at the family home to witness the historic sod-turning ceremony — a powerful symbol of hope restored and dignity reclaimed.
Addressing the community, Mr. Manyike, who also serves as the Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality, reaffirmed that the project will be completed within 14 days.
“This is what responsive leadership looks like. We are not here to make promises; we are here to deliver. The Foundation will construct a five-room house valued at R100 000, comprising two bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen and a fully customised, wheelchair-accessible bathroom to accommodate little Lerato,” he stated.
The intervention follows the devastating loss of seven-year-old Lerato’s legs due to severe kidney failure — a tragedy that moved the community and leadership to act swiftly and decisively.
Moretele Single Whip, Hon. Cllr Nkele Mleta, commended the community for standing united behind the Mhlongo family and stressed that meaningful development must prioritise society’s most vulnerable.
“This project affirms that no family will be left behind. Through unity, compassion and decisive leadership, we are restoring dignity and changing lives,” she said.
The official handover of the completed house is scheduled for 15 March 2026. This milestone will stand as tangible proof that when leadership listens, acts and partners with communities, dignity is not promised — it is delivered.
